Stock vs Arch Network Performance

Postby TheWalt » Thu Mar 01, 2012 7:39 pm

I have been browsing the forums for a while and picked up 2 devices.

The first was a POGO-E02 which runs VERY well as a stand alone server off a 16gb flash drive (no additional storage). I was so happy with it I then bought a 1TB GoFlex Home with the intent of installing alarm and setting up a NAS.

For fun I tried using the built in software, mounted the share, and copied some files. Average speeds are ~20mb/sec which is decent for such a low powered device. As I just need a windows (smb) share, I am debating setting up alarm at all.

So my question is, for a simple SMB shared drive, would I gain any performance out of alarm?

Thanks in advance!

I am getting ~27-30 MB/s with samba over Gigabit, which basically is max USB speed.

I ran stock for a few more days with no issues, but ended up installing ALARM today. My old NAS was a FIT-PC Slim running Ubuntu 8.04 and I just missed some of the other features, esp being able to SSH from work and wget big files so they were ready when I got home.

Thanks to all who made this process painless. It took no time at all to get a booting system and samba configured, even though this is my first encounter with Arch Linux. Speeds are similar to before, but the added functionality is worth it IMHO.
