How to open a port

Complete newbie here. Have set up ArchLinux on PogoPlug v2, Pacman v4.0.2 – libalpm v7.0.2

Have set up a small script to play a wav file thru usb sound card. When the script is run the wav file is played fine.

My question is how to open a port and have the script listen on that port for a remote command to run the script.
