[SOLVE] USB Wifi problem

Postby skyron » Fri Oct 26, 2012 10:00 pm

Hello !

I installed ArchLinux without any problem. (MPD server with USB DAC, streaming ...)
Only my USB Dongle can't work.

Maybe the community can help me (I'm a little noob in linux)

when I use lsusb I have this :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')us 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter

So I looked on the net how to setup the wifi and installed the wifi-select
I had an error :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'n')l80211: 'nl80211' generic netlink not found
Failed to initialize driver 'nl80211'
rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device

I know it's a driver problem and I read I need to use the module R8712U
So I had it in rc.conf and reboot : same error

I don't know what to do, can someone help me please ?

Thanks
Skyron

What Archlinux version do you use? Try updating to latest version, it has updated drivers, but may not be installed by default. You may need to update Uboot first, depending on your device model - which one? Several threads are devoted to updates here, and Linux commands and packages can be found via Linux Reference and ArchLinux Wiki sites.

Git a feeling this is the same as the edimax stick. Search these forums and raspberry pi for edimax.
It's a case of download source, extract, edit Makefile, make, copy module, and depmod. Don't download a compiled driver, a hint is if kernel is upgraded you need to compile and etc

I've read reports, in latest Linux versions Realtek WiFi chipsets are better supported. It may be useful also to go through [How-To] Enable Wireless thread despite it for a different ARM type.

Thank you guys.

For the update I used the pacman -Suy before installing wifi-select.
I will take a look at the post about UBoot update and the link

I will post the results in some days.

See ya

Ok, I find another page which gives command to show how the module is running

But with the command :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'm')odinfo 8712u | grep 8172

It sais the module does not exists.
So I download the driver and unzip in /Lib/firmware/RTL8191SU

But now I can continue : in many guids it said to type make, but the command doesn't exists.

Any idea to build the driver ?

Tks for helping

Perfect, tks

But I have some errors during make process :
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')root@alarm rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20120405]# make

make: *** [modules] Error 2

I think something is missing.

before we get into the above:

Have you checked dmesg for any firmware problems?

Several documents show that this should indeed be handled by the 8172 driver.
