Download Speed - Which device

Postby ygator » Sun Nov 25, 2012 10:47 pm

I was using a dockstar as a sabnzbd downloader and it could max out my Internet connection. When I was able to up my Internet speed it can no longer max it out. On a PC I get ~3.4MB/s, but on the dockstar I only get ~2.1MB/s.

I was wondering if any of the other platforms supported would be able to max out my Internet connection?

I was looking at:
1. Zyxel NSA320 or maybe the faster NSA325
2. POGOPLUG B01 (I read you can hack SATA on it)*
3. ????
or I might just end up using my foxconn netbox.

*I read a post where someone had said that the SATA on the B01 is only slightly faster then USB. I also read that people who ordered B01's are actually getting E02 which I already have one. Plus another person had said that the B01 they got did not have the SATA plug on then.

Thanks

B01's do have the SATA port internally. I have one and just ordered another B01 yesterday from buy.com for $12.99+tax free shipping for total $14.11. Mine has shipped but they are now out of stock. The SATA is much faster than the USB. hdparm shows double the speed. You can write to a SATA attached disk at approx 30 MB/s. But it can be cpu constrained and I don't know how much cpu is taken by sabnzbd. If you boot from SATA, you can overclock the dual cpu to 850 MHz over the standard 700 which make each cpu just a bit faster than the single cpu of the E02. The E02 however has twice the memory (256 MB vs B01's 128 MB) and it runs newer versions of linux. I use USB Serial which only works for me on the E02, not the B01.

Many places that sell the P21 are actually E02's in P21 boxes. This is commonly the case when the UPC code is 850877002245. jr.com has been doing this lately. I got an E02 this way when I wanted one from buy.com reselling for adorama. But I have never seen a B01 listing yield an E02 though I am not saying it could not happen.

It really depends on what's causing your slowdowns. I would fire up htop over a ssh connection and watch to see if anything is pegging the cpu/memory usage. As for the oxnas, I doubt it would help your issue.

@karog,
Someone in post I can't remember where said they received B01 without the SATA port being populated.
I was going to get one from that deal as well, but decided against it.

@xenoxaos,
I'll try htop next time I use the dockstar to download.

Thanks

That person did not know what they were talking about. The SATA port is internal only; you have to open the case to get at it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('karog', 'I') have one and just ordered another B01 yesterday from buy.com for $12.99+tax free shipping for total $14.11.

And I got B01 marked packaging with a pink E02 in it. buy.com is researching whether they can replace it with a guaranteed B01 or else will refund money. What the heck is Pogoplug up to shipping so many E02's under B01 and P21 packaging? This is ridiculous.

Hey karog!

Too funny. I know you wanted the B01/P21 (from talking to you on the tomatousb forum). I actually got in on the same buy.com deal and picked up another two E02 pogoplug (which I was hoping for).

How about picking up the PogoPlug Series 4 from Amazon for $40 (assuming its still that price)? No need to open it up to get access to the sata port plus you get sata power and 2 usb 3.0 port.

I got one and was rather disappointed that I wasn't getting any better throughput using the usb 3.0 port (yes I have a usb 3.0 drive). Will be testing the throughput on the sata port in the next week or two.

I still need some convincing that the cpu isn't the bottleneck for network throughput.

For the record, I'm using ext3 with a gigabit switch (no jumbo frame enabled) and testing large file transfer using a wired Windows 2012 server. I'm getting roughly ~18MB (don't recall if that's only write or read and write).

jr.com has the V4 for $19.99 free shipping through 12/10/2012. For me, the 800 MHz Kirkwood is too slow.

I was referring to the PogoPlug Series 4 (non-Mobile) version. The PogoPlug Mobile is $19.99. Looks to be the same processor. Is the difference between the PogoPlug Series 4 versus PogoPlug Mobile, just the USB3.0 ports? That would explain why I'm not seeing any drastic difference in network/samba performance I guess.

I didn't even realize they downgraded the hardware in the newer models. :(
