USB hard drive boot issue

Postby woody » Sat Dec 29, 2012 3:16 pm

I have my Pogoplug v2 set up to boot from a USB hard drive. If I set up the hard drive so that it's powered over the USB connection from the Pogoplug, everything boots ok. When I use a USB Y adapter to provide external power to the drive, the Pogoplug will not boot.

It seems to be some kind of timing issue; if the power to drive comes on as the Pogoplug is rebooting, then everything is good. When the drive is externally powered, it's already running when the Pogoplug boots and for some reason, the boot process fails.

Does anybody know what would cause this problem? Seems like the Pogoplug should boot when the drive is already powered up.

What you aren't seeing is the difference between the drive seeing the power lost, then restored (cold start) vs seeing the connection to the device drop, and then return and be re-init'd (warm start). The warm start is slower than uboot wants.

Sorry, not sure if I understand. Here's the scenario: I have disk plugged into a power source, so it's powered. I unplug Pogoplug power supply and then plug it back in again. Boot fails. In this case, isn't removing power from PP and plugging in again going to cause a cold start?

Could this be feedback of power back to v2?
Look around, there are directions to use a piece of PVC tape an 5v of USB to see if this is so

I think this might be the problem. The USB is probably feeding current back to the PP so that it's not doing a proper cold boot. I noticed that when the powered disk drive is plugged in, there is a a light showing on the ethernet jack even when the power cord is pulled of the PP.

I searched around, but did not see anybody discussing this. I'll look for the discussion on using tape to fix this. Thanks for the suggestion!
