GoFlexHome questions the search function hasnt answered ;)

Postby derdigge » Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:54 pm

Dear community!

Iam searching this site/forum for over two hours now but still have questions.
Currently i do not own such a device but i plan to buy one.

As i have read here, diskspeed is much $better when using ext4.
But afaik from other devices uboot cant boot from ext4? (changed last 10month?)
Can someonde pls "$(echo $better)" ? Whats it in numbers using nfs for example?
I mean, currently i reach 23mb/s on my Router (MIPS 24Kc V7.4 680mhz) when moving isos to it.
Is there a speedgain for me by switching to a GoFlexHome?

Can i use multiple partitions then? ext3 for booting/System and ext4 for storage, or are there Limitations?

Is there an actual/updateable kernel inside? I will need dvb-*.ko ´s for example.
And what can i ecxpect of that Installation?
Will there bee an compiler for "nice life" with all those tarballs?

Thanks for reading this ......

Best Regards

The uboot on the devices at this time cannot boot ext4 / directly, they need an ext2/3 or fat /boot to go off of. You can however, of course test ext4 with a parition, or a loopback image.

Transfer speed on average with 1.2GHz device is 27mB(yte)/s. I will assume that your 23mb/s is 23mb(it) since you used lower case b which is about 3mB/s (about what I used to get with my Linksys E3000) so you will gain quite a bit in speed.

Thanks for the replys.
I am talking in megabytes.

Under 50Megabytes/s its no Option for me.
It is really poor and not really usable in my opinion.....

I thought it is more when using sata and a 2x faster cpu than my router.

I don't know how you get that speed with a mips router. My E3000 has MIPS74K V4 CPU @500MHz and speed was not greater than 5-6 mBytes/s.

As for these devices I was talking about samba, nobody really tested NFS so far.

You should try nfs or ftpfs ;) ext4 formated samsung 5400rpm hdd.
You would be astonished about the speedgain!

If you are on HWver 1.0 you are on Broadcom BCM4718 SOC.
I never seen nice speeds on bcm SOC @ usb!

I think there's only one HW revision for E3000. At the time (4 years ago? it was actually wrt610 v2 when I bought it, then reflashed CFE and overclocked) Atheros wasn't really an option as it wasn't supported well by 3rd party firmwares. This was actually the reason to buy one of these arm devices. Either way 50mB/s seems unrealistic unless you get a more expensive armv7 board w/ onboard sata/dedicated x86 server and a faster (than 5400rpm) hard drive.

Just hit my NSA320 with an FTP of a 400 MB file, transfer waved between 39MB/s & 64MB/s, avg ~ 54MB/s

Like I was saying, it's all about the protocols used. Since he is using FTP, its a much lighter weight, less chatty protocol.
