Streaming to Android (with HipServ?)

Postby NASuser » Wed Jan 09, 2013 10:14 pm

I want to stream media to my Android phone from my GoFlex Home, and I was surprised to see that there aren't really any free options. HipServ, which is installed on stock GoFlexes, seems to be pretty good, and I already have a license to use it (since it came with the GoFlex). I'm planning on restoring the stock OS, but I don't think Seagates recovery program will restore the bootloader too. Will UBOOT boot the stock OS? Is there a better way to stream media to my Android phone?

What client are you using to stream?

Alright:
There are many ways you can stream from your GFH to any* device over the network. DLNA (miniDLNA works great), HTTP chunk streaming (raw, no re-encodes, up to you to sort out), UPnP (there are a few options), as well as the option to use MPD (and have it serve over HTTP as long as you have it serve out FLAC until someone gets shine-fxp working with it)

For video, you will want to share via miniDLNA, samba or AFP, possibly nfs.

I'm already using NFS to stream to my laptop and XBMC machine (a RPi). I mostly want it for when I'm away from home, so it needs to be accessible from outside my LAN. I did consider HTTP streaming, but I tried to get it set up a few years ago and it was pretty difficult on a GoDaddy shared hosting. It'd probably be a lot easier to set up on a machine I own, though, but I'd like a nicer interface than what I'd be able to make myself.

Can I set up a DLNA or UPNP server so it'd be accessible over the internet? I want some access restrictions, too, and I don't know of any for either protocol. I have been wanted to set up a VPN, though, so this might be the time to do it. All of my devices are running linux (except my phone, but close enough), so I don't want or need samba and AFP.

That works fine then. You can easily setup openVPN, and solve all your problems.
