I recall encountering this same problem once. I am not sure what caused it but rebooting solved the problem.

rebooting didn't help, but tried a lot of memory reductions in my.cnf, and I can force it up with the non-optimal:

# mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &

I think the device is just out of memory for my setup, perhaps setting up mysql/mariadb first, then nginx, fast-php next time would give it the memory heaps it initially needs?

What is your swap file size?

I don't have a swap partition, and didn't setup a swap file (using just an 8GB usb stick), but webmin does show that a potential swap file (empty) is in /tmp

since the mysqld -safe is running, I'm going to keep it this way until it goes down, and then re-install and get it setup in webmin (which currently shows mariadb not running, but when I type mysql at root shell prompt, maraidb does come up and loads existing data, operates fine).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rty', 'W')hat is your swap file size?
