rebooting didn't help, but tried a lot of memory reductions in my.cnf, and I can force it up with the non-optimal:
# mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &
I think the device is just out of memory for my setup, perhaps setting up mysql/mariadb first, then nginx, fast-php next time would give it the memory heaps it initially needs?
