Jumbo Frames - Does it increase samba performance?

Postby grayman4hire » Thu Apr 04, 2013 5:27 pm

Just wanted to check if anyone did any testing with Jumbo Frame and Samba. Did it increase performance at all? What frame size did you use?

From some setups, yes. You need to test it on your particular hardware. See my results here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Jumbo_Frames

Thanks for the response.

On my DLINK DNS-323 NAS, using Jumbo Frame increased performance dramatically (20% or 30%) because the NAS was CPU bound. Just curious how much of a difference it makes on the PogoPlug V2/V4, if any.

I guess I'm going to have to test it myself and report back.

I did a few quick non-scientific test this morning and didn't noticed any performance difference when enabling 9000K jumbo frames when transferring a single large file (>1GB).

Note: I verified jumbo frame was working correctly using ping specifying large packets and no fragmentation.

What did surprise me was that I was getting around 28MB read/write performance over SAMBA4 and EXT3. I recall only getting around 23MB when I first tested network transfer speed, but that was with SAMBA3 though.
