Poor man's Dynamic DNS

Postby permitivity » Mon Jun 10, 2013 1:35 pm

It seems like services like dyndns and the like are becoming more annoying and requiring you to log into the website every now and then.

Is there a way to run a program on the Pogoplug to email you the outward facing IP address of your home router? Like if you go to whatismyipaddress.com, they tell you where they see you connecting from. If there's a way to capture that info and send it in an email once a day, so you can find your IP address every now and then.

Ideas?

Check out http://freedns.afraid.org/ which still offers free Dynamic DNS services without the requirement to log in to their website every 30 days.

Check out this TomatoUSB Site to Site (Open)VPN Tutorial which has instruction on configuring this particular dynamic DNS service with a Tomato router. Sorry I don't have specifics on setting up Dyn DNS service with a Pogoplug, but it should not be too difficult to figure out.

I'm using dyndns, and you're right, they're getting less friendly. I recently signed up with no-ip.com also, and I have no complaints there. You can automatically update both of these and some others using the ddclient package.

Dyndns used to be great and it plain sucks now, especially with their recent change that you have to sign up using their free trial and your credit card (if you forget to cancel they will charge you for the service, if you don't you keep that free account) and 30 day sign in for free accoundts.

No-IP - completely free to sign up, but you have to sign in every 30 days. And by sign in I don't mean ddns client signing in to update your ip, but you have to go to their website and sign in.

What grayman4hire pointed out is probably the best service so far. I've been using it for a while now.
