RAM vs NAND which is better for Arch?

Postby yazyazoo » Mon Jun 24, 2013 3:44 pm

I have just two units with Arch. I have a Pogo E02 and Dockstar. I can see on that they have the same 1.2 Marvell processor but the RAM and NAND are different sizes.

RAM NAND
Pogoplug 256MB 128MB
DockStar 128MB 256MB

I am running Pogo with Sabnzbd, Sickbeard, Couchpotato which has been fine. However I am just put this combo on the Dockstar and it seems to be slower and a little more buggier. I can also notice a drop in download speed when Sabnzbd is raring the files together.

Is the difference in the RAM which makes the Pogo E02 better? What does the NAND play, is it the OS?

RAM would be better for Arch since, you actually don't use the NAND at all.

Are you using a swap partition or swap file? You probably should.

I am using a swapfile.img not a swap partition. Does it make a difference? I think I am following your blog when installing this on the Dockstar. It does seem slower than the E02. Could the way I installed the Sickbeard and Sabnzbd and couchpotato make a difference. I didn't use your method of pacman -Sy sickbeard-git sabnzbd couchpotato-git.

I used the yaourt -AS sickbeard-git couchpotato-git.

So is the NAND actually holding the Pogoplug OS?

I believe a swap partition has slightly better performance versus a swap file, however I personally use a swapfile for its simplicity.

Performance will be better on the Pogoplug because you have twice the RAM.

Yes the NAND is used for the built in OS and has no impact on your performance.
