[?] how to make use of eject button on Series 4 pogolug

Postby permitivity » Sat Sep 28, 2013 5:29 am

I couldn't find any uses of the eject button on a series 4 pogplug. According to Arch, it is under "/dev/input/event0". But I have no idea what that means. I'd like to be able to use that button to run a command. Maybe run a .service file? Maybe start a program?

Any ideas?

Well, I googled it and one of the top results is my own post :)

But the google results aren't useful. They deal with X and mouse events...nothing really relevant to Arch running on Pogoplug. I'm sure someone who knows much more about Linux could fit the pieces together, but then that defeats the purpose of this forum.

Hi,
Check out input-event-daemon in the AUR:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/input-event-daemon/

DESCRIPTION
-----------
input-event-daemon(1) is a daemon which executes a user-defined command on
input events, such as keys, mouse buttons and switches. This can be useful
to handle special keys on laptops or multimedia keyboards without X11.

Im still waiting for my series 4 to arrive and plan to make a small arch based nas. Theoretically I could use this button to trigger a script that will look for newly installed devices and automount and share via samba right? Then i could just pop in an sd card or thumb drive and press a single button to share it without having to ssh in or do much. Has anyone done anything like this yet?

You wouldn't need the button to do that. Look up udevil. Ideally the button would be used to I unmount the drive(s) and/or shutdown the pogoplug cleanly.

It would be really useful to be able invoke the shutdown command with the button. The suggestions to use the "input-event-daemon" sound good, but it's way beyond my level of Linux knowledge to implement.

I just wrote up how I did this. Since this post was the top google result when I was looking, I'll link it here: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=6410
