Create a RAID1 Mirror on NSA325?

Postby SomeoneOnLine » Wed Oct 23, 2013 1:22 am

If I have ALARM installed on the left drive/sda, how would I go about creating a raid1 mirror between the 2 drives (left and right drive) if the OS is already installed on 1 of them?

Thanks,

This belongs under V5/Kirkwood now.

Could I follow the below tut on howto setup it up?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co ... RAID_array

It says at the top that it is outdated. Will that cause me problems following the tut?

If not could you recommend one for me to follow? :)

That's not quite going to cover it.

I dug around, and here is what I have found:
- You need to create a uInitrd (and add that to uboot's bootcmd's)
- You need to alter the kernel command line from uboot
- You need to be willing to re-make the original disk if you screw it up :P

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'I') dug around, and here is what I have found:

Well. The last one there I am ok with. I have already reinstalled alarm a few times while I self-educate myself on alarm and other aspects of this. But the other 2 are a tad bit out of my league. I would just hate to use a single disk and get it all dialed in the way I want then have a disk fail and have to start all over from scratch (hence the need for raid1 mirror). In the mean time i will just accept that there is really no relatively easy way to setup a raid1 on the nsa325 on alarm. I get nervous playing with uboot as I dont want to brick my device since I dont have a rs323 cable made yet for it. Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction though.

You can also shrink the OS partition, and create a raid1 array on a second partition, in combination with an (equal sized) partition on the 2nd disk.

BTW, in my opinion raid1 is overrated. You're better off using a script which backups your data once a day, or something like that.

Mijzelf is correct.

If you opt to not raid the rootfs, but the media partition, this is FAR less complex.

After thinking about it. I agree. Less complicated is better (kiss) in my case. Maybe I can just create a media partition on each drive and use rsync to mirror sda and sdb or something. I just want some kind of redundancy between the core data I put on the drives in case of a drive failure.

would it be possible to put alarm in NAND like the stock ZyXel firmware? Then it might be easier. I know that the NAND on the 325 is only 128MB so my guess it no.
