Disable logging to extend USB stick lifetime

Postby JJpogo » Fri Nov 15, 2013 5:03 pm

I'd like to compile a list of places where ArchLinux writes log information. I see the flash drive lights flashing pretty frequently and would like to minimize writes to extend the life of the USB drive. This is the only place I know of where you can comment out what things to log and what not to:

/etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf

Are there other sources of log files? I'm also pretty ignorant of what the different logs do, and how frequently each item actually writes to the drive. If you think there are some items that don't write very often and are important items to know about, I'd appreciate a heads up.

This blogger has some recommendations on what to comment out and what to leave active.

Unless you installed syslog-ng, its not longer a part of the base image.

See the Arch Wiki for journalctl

you may set Storage=volatile in /etc/systemd/journald.conf
Check those tips for SSD, it can apply to USB flash drive

I use the noatime in /etc/fstab :

/dev/root / auto defaults,noatime 0 1
/dev/sdb1 /media/usb auto defaults,noatime 0 2

You can check with a 'more /proc/mounts'
