sata adapters

Postby joemegahertz » Thu Sep 04, 2014 6:53 am

Hello, I searched through the forum before posting this so if it has been answered already, my apologies.

I have a goflex net with alarm installed and working. Im in a quest for better speed and storage space. I am currently using a 3 tb usb 3.0 drive over the usb 2.0 connection and getting round bout 25-30 mb/s. I assume hooking a drive up to the sata ports would give me a speed boost. However the official hd's don't have nearly enough room. I've read I can use any 2.5 drive on the system, however I've read also it won't be as tight as fit and I don't want to cause additional wear on the hds. I was hoping a adapter was made that would go from my usb 3.0 connection to the sata ports. However everything I seem to find is to take a sata hard drive and connect it to a usb port. My hds are powered over usb no I wouldn't think I would need a additional adapter for power. If anybody could help a guy out with other a link or point out some fallacies or bad assumptions or a better idea it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx everyone

Why not use 3.5 hdds? Works fine. If you are worried about power wd green is a good choice.

If you open up that USB 3.0 enclosure, you will find it has a SATA hard drive inside. Assuming its a 3.5 inch drive it won't fit in the slot, you could rig an eSATA port and find an eSATA enclosure.

I would need a adapter wouldn't I for power and an external psu then?

I've been looking into that as well and might have to go that route.

Thank you both of you for your quick responses.

I have quite a few 2.5 usbhdd and might want to use those but worried bout them not having a tight fit. I've looked for goflex shell but haven't been able to find any. Has anyone know where I can get one at?

I have goflex home but afaik it's the same. No adapters, it is powered by gfn or gfh itself. I've used 2 different 7200rpm drives and it everything worked fine. I have a 5900 rpm drive in it now.

thanx

i just had a very stupid idea or a good idea. Could I just remove my 2.5 usb hdd from the housing like mentioned in a above post and get a standard sata cable to go from the flex to the hdd? I may have been over thinking all of this lol!

Nope, there would be a power problem. The 12V rail is NOT connected. You'd need a small modification as described here.

If its a 2.5 inch drive, just plug it in. You may want to see if you can improve the fit a little, but if its a 2.5 inch drive it only needs 5V.

I guess Home and Net are different after all. I have only seen the Net on pictures and for some reason I always thought those 2 drives are 3.5" drives. Now I looked again and those seem to be 2.5" hdd slots. The Home is 1 x 3.5" vs 2 x 2.5" in the Net.

Yeah, there are some differences. I don't have a 3.5" HDD at hand (except the one that's a speaker now...) so I can't test whether it fits in the slots (there is a removable frame in each slot to adjust the slot size for some Seagate HDDs. But I doubt the full slot is big enough for 3.5")...
