I realize this was about a month ago, but here goes....

Where is the step of downloading bsdtar and uncompressing the Alarm tarball using that? Looks like you used the native tar binary and that didn't work. I just installed a new Pogoplug S4 today following the how to with deviation from the howto of putting the Alarm tarball onto your hard drive under /tmp/alarm (which I noticed you did as well). If you grab the bsdtar binary as the install instructions say you should be good to go.
