Pogoplug Series 4 - USB3 drive not found

Postby pdkrocul » Sat Dec 05, 2015 4:56 pm

Hello,

I have a Pogoplug Series 4. Drives in external USB2 cases work OK. Drives in external USB3 cases are not recognized.

Case: Vantec NexStar 6G (NST-366S3-BK)
Drive: WD Green 2TB (WD20EZRX)

Ideas on why? Where to start debugging?

Thanks,
Paul

The USB3 ports on the PPV4 can't be used by the bootloader.

I'm booting from the USB2 port. The USB3 SATA is a data drive.

Then you need to check dmesg and lsusb for more information.

On a fresh install, I can boot. I plug in a USB3 disk, and I see it recognized in dmesg.

If I reboot with the USB3 disk attached, the boot hangs.
If I remove the USB3 disk and reboot, everything OK.

I'm reading something about U-Boot having problems because the boot order (disk number) changes, so the boot filesystem isn't found. (ie U-Boot looking to USB3 for root filesystem)

Is it possible to add label to USB2 root filesystem so that U-Boot can always find?

Make sense?

Look into installing new U-Boot 2015.10.. There is sticky thread for it. It will fix your problem

I'm having a case of the stupids. I read the Sticky on U-Boot v2015.10 released. I don't know what to do next.

The archlinux U-Boot install instructions for the Pogoplug were as simple as
wget
run

I see a link to source code in git. Is there a pogoplug compiled package? Also, if there are improvements to U-Boot, why isn't this in the default instructions?

(I'm not trying to be a jerk... I'm just confused)

It is even simpler to install the new version. Boot into archlinuxarm and and run
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'pacman -Sy uboot-pogoplugv4')

Making progress. Thanks.

MAC address changed to 00:00:11:22:33:44 changed back with fw_setenv

booted with USB2 file system and without USB3 data drives attached
USB3 drive recognized when plugged in

However, still not booting when USB3 data attached at powerup

With USB3 data drive at powerup, I get stuck in a loop. Every 31 seconds:
