New to Pogoplug Pro

So i'm very new to my Pogoplug and can't seem to find any guides or anything on what can be done to it?
Does anyone have time to point a new guy in the right direction?

The main and only real reason I'm interested in putting a different OS on my pogoplug device is to see if its possible to have my hard drives sleep. My 2TB external hard drive is spinning constantly when plugged in to the device and i am worried it may hurt the life of it. Any pointers are greatly appreciated!
