[RESOLVED] Clone main usb flash drive

Postby pogouser » Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:17 am

I have installed the latest archlinux on pogoplug B01. I followed the instructions and installed it on a flash drive. What I want to do is backup the main flash drive on a HD and want to be able to boot from the HD. I am trying to follow the instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fu ... with_rsync to backup the entire system, however I don't seem to have grub or lilo installed on my pogoplug. My /boot directory seems to have uImage* files. Could anyone please help me in figuring out how to make the HD bootable? Has anyone successfully cloned the main bootable drive and followed some other method?

Thank you!

There is no grub or lilo on these devices. If kernel, loaded from NAND by u-boot, sees that drive as sda, it will use it's first partition as the rootfs.

Thanks for the reply. So how do I make a clone? I tried copying the MBR with the dd command and used cp command to copy all the files from the flash drive to the HD. But still I can't seem boot through the HD and I had no other drive hooked to the pogoplug. I am trying to replace the flash drive with the HD.

Also, if uboot picks up the boot drive like that, how do I make sure that it boots through the bootable drive when I have multiple drives attached to it?

Thanks!

The MBR is unused when using USB drives, so it doesn't matter. As for the multiple USB drives, as I have stated multiple times, in multiple threads, at the moment you are at the mercy of which USB device responds first during bootup.

Forgive me for my ignorance and not reading the previous posts. However, with all due respect, my foremost question is still unanswered as to how to clone the USB flash drive onto the HD drive and boot through it? I want to replace the USB flash drive.

Nevermind I got it to work. Rsync was failing to copy some files, fixed those and I am now able to boot with the new HD. Thanks for all your help.
