Problem with root password [Resolved]

Postby imagiro1 » Sun Jan 15, 2012 1:58 am

So at first I thought I forgot my password. Then I remembered the Pogoplug with a recent (week old) installation had been acting up. Turns out the cheap HD which holds the file system doesn't boot up with the other drive which holds all my files is plugged in. And seriously, who forgets the password which was still set to the default (yes, shame on me) after a week?

Turns out I didn't forget it. I plugged the drive into my laptop and found I have a passwd and passwd- file. As well as shadow and shadow- file. And files don't match. The shadow- file is completely missing a user I had recently added. I have never seen this before. Is it safe to remove the password- and shadow- file?

Also, what's the minimum size flash drive I can store the file system on? I think it would be safer to use a flash drive vs. a HD enclosure.

Nope. Time is good.

I was able to load the system on my Mac and copy another user's password to the root password. An old trick I learned years ago.

I have a 1gig flash drive. Is that too small to copy the filesystem to?

Yes. 1 gb is really small. I upgraded to 2 gb after a few months and a month ago I upgraded to 8 gb.

Go with a minimum of 2 gb if you just use basic functionality. If you tweak alot go with 4 to 8 gb.
