POGO-P24: is SAMBA what i need?

Postby exca » Sat Jan 21, 2012 5:44 pm

Hello,

i've been searching the whole afternoon to find a way to speed up my pogoplug.
I have it installed in my office which has a 1,25mbps uploadspeed that gets an 150-160KB/s average upload speed.

However when i'm at home (and i want to reach my files here, the reason i bought it) i only get 58KB/s maximum download speed. I guess the reason is that the pogoplug sends the files to Denmark pogoplug servers first, that send it back to me (belgium) on their turn, creating a bottleneck. Just for the record, i don't have any problems in my local network in the office.

So i'm looking for a way to access my pogoplug device/attached drive straight-out without making a detour, in a way the pogoplug acts as a server itself. I'm looking for a solution where i can program the drive in my notebook (PC) in 'my computer' and on my iMac in the office in 'finder'. When i take the notebook somewhere else, i want it to be able to just open the drive accessing it as fast as possible.

Is my wish possible?
I'm a total noob at network connections.

Thanks already!

Samba doesn't play well over the internets. What it sounds like would be best for you would be something like dropbox. It keeps local copies and syncs the up. Free account up to 2GB, but if you refer people, you get more. Like this -> http://db.tt/PgJ5kNv

Wait for the updated kernel it will support VPN (from what ive heard). Then you can pull it directly from your plug. You can also use FTP now. Keep in mind that you'll need to open ports on your router at the office. If your ISP gives you a dynamic IP it will be a little frustrating using it over the internet though.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PKG', 'W')ait for the updated kernel it will support VPN (from what ive heard).

OpenVPN works fine as server or client with the current kernel. The only slight issue I have run into is that the clock needs to be set (using ntp at boot-up) on an OpenVPN server before clients try to connect. Perhaps you're thinking of NFS, when you say wait for the updated kernel.

I hate to sound stupid but .. 1.25Mbps is 156KBps.. that capitalization of the B/b matters a lot. (1250Kbps/8=156.25KBps)

Did you install openntp?

*****.. Ive never tried openvpn... Ive tried PPTP Server but I got stuck on iptables.. the firewall didnt work or something so it wouldnt start. Thanks for the info! Im gonna try the openvpn now :D

EDIT:
So I did some research on openvpn... But my iphone doesnt support it... Oh well... Hope the new kernel doesnt take much longer :D

EDIT 2:
Need ppp_generic module in kernel for PPTP VPN. But the OP can use OpenVPN for his situation though :)
