mac address has changed

Postby blueblazer22x » Tue Jan 31, 2012 4:58 pm

Newbie here...

I've been fiddling with my B0-1 for a week or so. Through various trials and errors, I've finally got it working as a Samba sever to stream movies over my home network.

However, on a recent reboot, the MAC and IP address changed. I'm still able to ssh like before (using the new IP address) and everything seems to functional normally. I'm just a little confused as to how the MAC changed. I though that was tied to the hardware.

Is this or could this become a problem?

Any insight is appreciated.

The MAC address is set in software, the default MAC is the same on every oxnas based plug. It really won't harm anything unless there is another plug on the network with the same mac address. If you want to, check /usr/local/mac_addr See if it exists and whether it contains a valid mac address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX. Honestly, I don't keep track of ip addresses on my local network. Local DNS on my router makes it really easy to know which device has which IP.

The /usr/local/mac_addr file contains the same mac as the sticker on the pogoplug. I created the file myself per the directions here under "help! it stopped working!".

The actual mac address per my router is different. I really am just curious as to why this happened.

Check your /etc/rc.conf in the DAEMONS=() line to make sure set-oxnas-mac is in there.

Possibly it failed to set the MAC correctly, and thus, the default was used.

I was still unable to pinpoint the culprit, so I re-installed the system on my flash drive and started from scratch. Now the original mac address has returned. Oh well...I learned a few more things along the way.

Thanks guys.
