Booting from flash drive IMG file

Postby SpyderPLUG » Tue Feb 07, 2012 4:21 pm

Hope I put this in the right place, new here. I did some searching here and found a couple threads relevant to what I am trying to do, but with my limited knowledge with Linux, I figure knowing some info will just get me into trouble.

I am trying to set up a Mythtv backend on a v3 Pogoplug, I have a LAMP setup working, but I am lost when it comes to setting up VNC and X11. It seems that every package I install needs something that needs to be set up, that needs something....
I found Plugmyth and tried to set that up(on a separate v3), but the instructions don't work with the newer models. The command line changes at a certain step and then there is no response. I am still able to see this plug in cloud storage, so no harm done(can also SSH). So my question is, is there a way to use the instructions to set up ARM and have it boot to a extracted IMG file? The plugmyth file was on megaupload(so I can't wget the file). If it needs to be extracted from boot, can I wget from LAN?

If you can give me some pointers to these sources.. I might better be able to help.

The instructions don't work on newer models for a reason.

Here's the info, http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/plugmyth/index.php?title=Main_Page
Their support forum is dead, and I figured I could use the instructions here to modify theirs.
System requirements list 'Pogoplug', maybe there was only one version when this was made. It lists "designed to run on Sheeva platform", is that a dealbreaker right there? I didn't know all the technical details until it failed and I tried to figure out why.

Yes, I know, but I spent hours trying to get a VNC working just to set up Mythtv. There was always something else I needed to set up(X11 > VNC > Desktop Manager > Display Manager >)and so on. I'm open to learning, and have learned a bit in this process, but it's frustrating when there is one thing that has issues and breaks everything. Comparing all the trouble I went through with no result to Plugmyth setup:

1. Open Webmin (http://ip.ad.dre.ss:10000) and login as admin/plugmyth. Open Other Commands, Custom Commands.
2. Click 'Start mythtv-setup'.
3. Now you can VNC into PlugMyth's IP address and you should be greeted by the mythtv-setup program. Run it as you normally would for any other MythTV configuration (be SURE to set PlugMyth's actual IP, do NOT use the default 127.0.0.1). When you're done, hit Esc to exit and click Ok.
4. Click 'Finish mythtv-setup' in Webmin, then 'Start mythbackend', and you're done! Fire up your frontend and connect it to PlugMyth.
