Swap on flash media... *READ ME*

Postby xenoxaos » Sat Jan 14, 2012 4:08 pm

NO! DO NOT DO IT! Swap on a flash drive is a terrible idea. Flash media only has a limited number of write/erase cycles before it goes POOF! If you put swap on one, it's not a matter of if it will go bad, but when, sometimes in a matter of days/weeks. So, unless you ABSOLUTELY need it, and know what you're doing. DO NOT DO IT!!!!! If you come around asking why x doesn't work or why alarm won't boot and you have swap on a flash drive, I will most likely tell you to go get a new flash drive, because the old one is probably dead.

Nope. The only time I really need any swap is when compiling a large piece of software. Then again, all my building gets done on a GFN or my Pro, both of which have hard drives.

Nand install is .. volatile. However, since swap can be just a file, or a parition, you can place it anywhere it can be accessed.

Our installation steps do not include NAND install. All installs are to external devices.

Only the kernel is installed to NAND, not the OS itself.
