Troubleshooting start point

Postby vfulco » Sat Mar 17, 2012 9:43 pm

Hey Gang- Thanks to all for a very helpful and responsive forum. A newbie to Arch and PP although I have moderate experience with Fedora and Ubuntu. I got thru the install process and everything went without incident. Actually tremendously easy. Only thing I did not do is set the automount of HD feature.

Using an 8gb flash drive, when PP rebooted the first time could SSH from my windows portable into it and update everything. Today, two days later, I am unable to do so. I also tried without the flash drive in (didn't think this would work) and also with the external HD plugged in that I plan on using (didn't think this would matter at all either). I set a static IP on my cisco router and neither this route nor a dhcp brings the pogoplug up. It boots up and the indicator light flashes for much longer than the 15-20 secs. observed by others; more like 2 minutes before shutting down.

Wondering if my starting off point for a fix is to run the flash drive in my Fedora box and re-install the archarm OS or is there something quicker/easier?

TIA, Vince.

Try booting with only the flash drive in, if that does not work, then stick it in another linux box and fsck. If you decide to re-image the rootfs (flash drive) then I would say make sure you do a check of the flash drive for bad sectors (you aren't the first to see this, hence out standing suggestion to use spinning rust).

There is a standing issue at the moment with u-boot and USB drives, wherein a second drive can cause the kernel to see the wrong drive as sda1 (uboot can't use USB to determine)

Thanks for the timely response. Went thru the process of re-installing thru another linux box and now I get the 15-20 second blinking then box shuts down. Should I move on to installing the OS on a USB connected SATA drive or try a different flash drive? TIA, Vince

Stop the presses. Re-checked install and mistakenly put the mac_addr file in my main box's /usr/local/ dir. Once moved to flash drive I am up and running. Now off to add the larger external drives and put it thru its paces. FWIW: flash drive is an 8 GB LaCie LabelKey which if bot on ebay thru newegg comes with at least 8GB of offline cloud storage free thru wuala. HTH. Thanks!
