First of all, thank you, very much! You put good effort into this, and it can ultimately be made to work.
Having said that, what I'll say here sums up as "...see what I mean?"
Good thing cr08 ran into this or I would have never (all right, maybe eventually) thought of checking for typos. Maybe it's just the embedded engineer in my, where verification and validation takes more than the actual development process. Then, the fun began with the pacman -Su --ignore glibc line asking: "Do you want to cancel the current operation and upgrade these packages now?" (referring to pacman itself) I thought pacman would eventually get upgraded and chose "no". I don't know if either way would have worked, but it appears that choice worked. After that, I got a bunch of warnings and an error:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')gt;>> Updating module dependencies. Please wait ...
ERROR: could not open directory /lib/modules/3.1.10-13-ARCH: No such file or directory
FATAL: could not search modules: No such file or directory

I don't know why it happened or what would have been the right thing to do, but I just ran the command again... it seemed to all work. Now if I run pacman -Syu, it says it's all good.

So, for now, the correct sequence appears to be:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'mv /lib/firmware/gmac_copro_firmware /usr/lib/firmware/
rm -rf /lib/firmware
pacman -R pcmciautils kernel26-oxnas-nopci kernel26-oxnas-pci
pacman -Syy
pacman -Su --ignore glibc
pacman -Su
')

And answer "no" when it asks if you want to upgrade pacman first, and "yes" to everything else.

I don't know if it all worked (trouble could always crop up later) and if this was the best way to do it, so a script would have been nice. Of course, a fixed rootfs would be best. We'll make do with what we have, until then.

Hi Kamen,

thanks for your post. I also had troubles with updating system and glibc, but after I followed your sequence all went OK.
I now get the message after pacman -Syu 'there is nothing to do'.

Thanks again and now back to get Wifi working....

Great thanks to Kamen, cr08, and especially WarheadsSE for the excellent work! This fixes the glibc update failure on my Pogoplug B01 and the hard crash when rebooting after a system update. Thanks a ton!!!
