No SSH for New Pogoplug Pros?

Postby jtagfun » Sun Sep 11, 2011 9:19 pm

I received and activated my new Pogoplug Pro last week, when I logged in "my.pogolug.com", clicked on "Security Settings" I could not found SSH setting (see attached). Does anyone have the same problem for the new Pogo Pros?

I tried to get support from CE, but CE support was useless except to paste the same message again and again:

"Thank you for the update.

Please try the following:

Safely eject your hard drive from my.pogoplug.com (if your drive is available), and physically detach your USB drive from the Pogoplug. Also exit the Pogoplug desktop application if you are running it. If your drive is not available on the website to safely eject, power down your Pogoplug and detach the hard drive.

If you have a Mac:

1) Attach your drive to your Mac, allow it to be discovered
2) Start the Disk Utility, highlight the icon representing your drive and click the "Verify" button and, if needed, the "Repair" button
3) Wait until the repair is finished...
4) copy and paste in an email to us any error messages you get (if applicable).
5) Safely unmount your hard drive from your Mac by either clicking Unmount in Disk Utility or dragging the icon representing your drive to the Trash.
5) Power cycle your Pogoplug, wait for a solid green LED on the front of the Pogoplug.
6) Power up your drive, and attach to your Pogoplug.
............"

I figured out I need to edit /etc/init.d/rcS to enable telnet and ssh.

Just ssh really, but telnet works.

You may have older Pogo Pros. The one I'm having had something like

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
if x.$(debug)
telnetd
dropbear
fi
')

in rcS, I removed the condition to have both telnet and ssh working.

There was no "telnetd" or "dropbear" in processes before I made the changes.

I have the same exact problem. No SSH setting to enable. I emailed the support and got the following response.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.

Please try the following to rectify your issue:

1. Sign out from my.pogoplug.com

2. Clear browser cache

3. Power cycle Pogoplug device

4. Sign into my.pogoplug.com

5. Verify Incoming UDP 4365 from the router is open for Pogoplug

Please keep me posted.

Kind regards,
-Shimi

Of course when I tried it, it didn't do anything. So I am still unable to activate the SSH. When I run nmap I see the following

PORT STATE SERVICE
80/tcp open http
3333/tcp open dec-notes
3334/tcp open unknown

Is there any other way to enable the ssh? Thanks.

One additional update. To eliminate any potential connectivity issues, I have connected the pogoplug directly to the hub which was directly connected to the modem (no router, no firewall, etc.). I also deactivated it and activated it again. Still no "enable ssh" option. It almost seems that the code on my.pogoplug.com to display this option is broken.

If it was removed, that that would definitely be false advertising since it is one of the feature advertised that the product can do :-(. Hope this is not the case.

Oh, forgot to add, I actually look at the source code of the web pages and the JavaScript functionality to toggle the SSH settings and change password is still there. So it is just the checkbox option which is missing. I wonder based on what it is generated?

CE support is the worst I have ever seen, they do not even read the questions, but paste the same thing again and again.

There was a thread at Pogoplug forum about opening an UDP port to have the check box enabled , I tried that but it didn't work for me.

I did most from serial console port. Without serial console, it might be possible to setup a DNS server to fake "my.pogoplug.com" and somehow to modify rcS or to set the x.debug" environment.
