Thanks all for all the suggestions - I've been away from a computer since yesterday so hadn't seen all of them till now. A few quick replies:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Philoo', 'a')t this point the pogoplug pro may not be the easiest platform for your project.
you might want to look at a kirkwood based system which are in effect much easier to deal with. I'm personally very fond of the iomega Iconnect even if it is in the "community supported" tier and does not have sata support.

Yeah, I realise that now, but I'm stuck; we essentially have zero money (the Pro was also a donation) as this work is for a migrant workers' union in north India to ease their internal accounts and membership system. I spend much time saying "if only..." :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Philoo', '
')* manually copy the kernel image where it needs to be (depending on USB or SATA, don't put it in the NAND unless you're 150% sure it is stable) and reboot.

The rest of this seems doable, but I'm terrified of the serial cable / NAND / tftp bit as I've never done that before. From this point in your list it seems like it's rebootable even without flashing it? Or have I simply misunderstood? WarheadSE also pointed out that there may be missing symbols in the kernel. I can attempt the NAND bit if I can find a serial cable here (that might take some work?).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadSE', '
')I suppose I should just compile a much larger bundle for fresh installs...

I have no idea how much work this involves, but if you ever did get the chance to do it, I'd be one very grateful user (along with several thousand migrant workers but they won't be on this forum :) ). I suppose it would be installable even on old systems by using your revert script and then a new one?

That might be one way to do it (using the revert script), but it's easier for me to just flash over the top. I keep 2 copies in NAND for a reason after all.

Sorry, not sure I fully understand - when you say "flash over the top", do you mean by serial cable or through the script?

Through A script, not that one.

Ok, a really basic question: if we can do it through a script, would it be possible for someone to:

1. compile the new kernel and modules
2. run the revert script to restore the original version
3. tweak the install script to match the size of the new kernel (not sure how to do this) and use the revised install script to flash it to the right place?

i.e. flash the kernel without using the serial cable...

I'll say this clearly for the record, so this isn't specifically aimed at you @shankargopal :

Do Not Flash to NAND an untested kernel. Ever.

Also, using the revert script multiple times is an absolute abuse of the NAND. Do not repetitively install/revert/install.

Thanks for the warning and the clarification. Will not attempt that then.

Then I think that I'll have to find a serial cable and manage testing via that, which might take a while, and in the meantime we'll find another system to make this gateway operational.

Meanwhile I will wait with fingers crossed in the hope that either the 2.6.31 or the 3.1 kernel will be compiled with these modules by one of the gurus like you, WarheadSE :).
