Geoff, I moved the /usr/lib/modules/modules dir instead of deleting.
Moved dir has 2.6.31.6_SMP_820/ and blank oxnas-save/.

As you suggested, I am moving the

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
mv /usr/lib/modules/2.6.31.6_SMP_820/ /usr/lib/modules/oxnas-save
cp -R /backups/modules-duplicated/2.6.31.6_SMP_820/ /usr/lib/modules/
')

Is the oxnas-save dir required?

Now. /usr/lib/modules/ contains
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '
2.6.31.6_SMP_820
3.1.10-12-ARCH
extramodules-3.1-ARCH
gmac_copro_firmware
oxnas-save
')

I am rebooting soon to give this a try. Thanks

Geoff: that was it. EVERYTHING WORKS now. All these troubles were caused because stupid me moved /lib/modules multiple times. Still learning ;). Thanks to Geoff and WarHeads for tremendous Customer Support.

I have been booting from USB drive.
- Would it be easier in future to upgrade/update if I boot from SATA instead of USB?
- If life is easier in SATA, is there a way to move USB install to SATA?

One more problem

After the recent upgrade:

System won't boot (blinking led) when there is any non-OS USB drive connected. I tried with 2 different external USB drives that worked perfectly before my recent fiasco.

Of course, system boots fine with just the root USB and then I can plug in external USB drives without troubles. Reboot doesn't like any other USB drives.

This is why it helps to have SATA :) no /dev/sda confusion.
