maybe that was the problem from the start.
A bad sector or whatever, caused the installation to fail, therefore it did not work.

So I formatted the drive to fat32 again and had a checkup running, now the drive seems to be fine.
But it is not booting the usb anymore... i tried the one from ulf as well as the one you prepared here http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=3110&hilit=devtmpfs

but it doesnt obtain an ip address, so i assume it isnt booting the usb...

ill keep playing around, maybe i can find out what i am doing wrong ... ;)

So i managed to get access to the drive again, and ran the usb (with the install from Ulf)
but apparently there is an issue with the partitioning.
The hdd is formatted Fat.
ill give it a try with a totally unpartitioned disk, maybe that helps.

okay i thought it was a smart idea to try the thing with a blank hdd but :

Partner key. Hmm, sound like fun_plug might be usable to assist in this cluster $%^& I hijacked it's scripting to make the installer for the NSA320.

with the fun_plug, i get a nice little telnet and can switch to sshd.
so i though i could follow the follow the tutorial for the pogoplug, but that obviously doesnt work due to the unsupported model.
So i would need to use the install from Ulf i guess, but as the fun_plug formats the usb, i would have to download the install files.
but as i am an idiot, im not sure how to.
shall i just use wget and download each file seperatly ? or does this git clone git://github.com/ft/NAS7820Tools.git work fine too? and then just ./do.sh and gogogo? ;)

What? No I mean I followed their suit on usb_functionkey.sh.2 and made the installer. Obviously it would entirely need reworked. You should be able to just use the pure SATA boot method.

Hi,

may I ask what the current status is with ALARM on the Medion oxnas based devices? I have a Medion P89633, which has the same architecture as the P8926 but with a 2TB harddisk.

My goal is to use the device primarily as a NAS and also as a media server, but have it perform some data logging and graphing on the side. For this I need:

- usbserial/PL2303 support (kernel modules)
- rrdtool
- perl

Could I do this safely with ALARM? I've been administering Linux systems for many years, but have zero knowledge about kernel mods and hacking. I currently have FFP 0.7 running, but that lacks the necessary kernel modules.

Regards, Richard

Perl & rrdtool : yes
usb_serial : I haven't tested it but it is built.

Thanks for the quick reply.

How stable and reliable is the current version 3.1.10 on the Medion in the meantime? There are several threads in this forum about problems, hangs and "not quite there yet", but no real success stories so far.

I am quite willing to try out, but would like to have an exit strategy to revert to the original firmware in case it doesn't work. I'd even buy a serial adapter to have console access if necessary, but I'm not ready to risk bricking my device.

This is probably a FAQ, but I haven't found the answer yet: What do I lose, compared to the stock firmware, when installing Arch Linux? I can do without the Web GUI, but I want Samba and a working DLNA media server, and I don't want to lose power saving features, especially HD spindown when not in use.

samba & minidlna are well supported packages, and have worked for a long time. Spinning the HDD down for long periods may be harder to do.

There are some issues with the 3.1.10 and I honestly haven't worked on hit in a while. Reversion should be as simple as re-extract/dd'ing the stock image onto the drive if you have made a backup. I am unaware of the capabilities of the Medion as I do not have one.

I must admit that this doesn't sound too encouraging. Could you point me to a description on how to backup the current status of my device, and also on how to restore this status if anything goes wrong?

I also read in another thread that disks with 4K sectors are unsupported, which makes me hesitate even more.

About the HD spindown issue: I'm aware that a "normal" Linux installation will write all kinds of logfiles etc. onto the disk at regular short intervals, so there is lot of HD activity interfering with spindown. Could this be avoided by putting the Arch install onto a USB flash stick?
