That one would work, with a change in the connector, yes. You only need the Tx, Rx & Gnd, and in a JST connector

would this require cutting the cable or is there an adapter to get it from TTL-232 to a JST connector? Would simply cutting a USB cable and using needles from wires to connector(JST?) on board work?

...I'm guessing you need a USB with the USB/Serial chip embedded ...

CA-42, cut cable, stick needle into end of each wire, remove needle an hole left fits onto plug pins.
Now with the part of cable you are about to discard, tap out colors to find out what they are.
You only use 3 wires

seems to have the right endpoints -- only concern:
"Utilizes Prolifc PL2303H chip, no companion UART controller."

is that a compatible usb/serial chip?

That looks like a stiff likelihood of being compatible, it uses the exact chip in the CA-42's after all. Decent price too.
