Can't get FTDI USB Serial device to work

Postby kiwi64ajs » Wed Jul 27, 2011 1:48 am

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to get a FTDI 232RL based USB Serial device to work on a PogoPlug Pro.

I have installed the ArchLinuxARM onto a USB memory stick connected to the PogoPlug as per the installation instruction on the website and things appear to work ok.

However when I insert the FTDI device I get the following entries in the log:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[ 501.110000] usb 1-1.4: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/start: -110
[ 501.110000] usb 1-1.4: chopping to 0 config(s)
[ 511.110000] usb 1-1.4: string descriptor 0 read error: -110
[ 511.110000] usb 1-1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=0403, idProduct=6001
[ 511.110000] usb 1-1.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 511.110000] usb 1-1.4: no configuration chosen from 0 choices')

I found the forum post about "OXNAS Kernel Modules (beyond 2011.06 rootfs)" http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1234 and downloaded the tar file and extracted it into the /lib/modules directory and then the PogoPlug would not come up on the LAN.

I then attached the USB stick to another Linux box and renamed the module directory and then extracted the originals from the rootfs image and it would boot again.

So I'm at a loss as to what to do - please help!

That the same problem I have. I think we have to wait for newer better kernel.

Hmmm...

Well I have tried to modify the install script: oxnas-install.sh to use the previous install image:

http://archlinuxarm.org/os/oxnas/ArchLinuxARM-oxnas-2011.04.tar.gz

But the script fails because some files are missing and I don't yet understand enough to safely fix it and I can't find oxnas-install.sh in the git repository.

Anyone know where I can find the previous version of oxnas-install.sh that will work with the 2011.04 archive?

Well a bit more progress. I tried another older FTDI based USB to Serial Adaptor and that works fine in that it loads the ftdi_sio driver and created a /dev/ttyUSB0 device. This adaptor has a FT232BM Chip

The device that does not work is a newer FT232R device.

Just as a test I downloaded the latest ArchLinux version and installed it on a VM on my PC and both devices work fine with that. The only difference I can see between these two systems is that the ftdi_sio driver on the ARM is version 1.5.0 and on the PC is 1.6.0

Looks like I need a newer ftdi_sio module.

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to build this from sources?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'W')elcome to the old kernel.

Ok, is there a new kernel?

When I did a pacman -Syu I noticed it downloaded a new 2.6.39.x kernel and printed installing... messages on the console but after a reboot it still shows 2.6.31.6 kernel.

Is this new kernel actually supported on the PogoPlug Pro? If so how can I install it so it will run 2.6.39.x after a reboot?

If it is not supported or is only partially supported what would I loose if I upgraded?

If you flash that uImage to nand, you WILL NOT boot.

Read the announcement at http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1410 regarding the kernel.

Basically, we're stuck with 2.6.31.6 until I or someone comes up with a valid patch to the mainline to support us.
