Once in a while, the USB subsystem doesn't initialize properly on power-up. If it's blinking green, then it's probably waiting forever for any drive to show up, either USB or SATA. If you power off and on again, it will probably work again. I have been using SATA mostly for over a year, and it has never failed to boot up on SATA. However, sometimes after it has booted up, I find that the USB subsystem didn't initialize. In that case, I just reboot until it does. If you're considering to use SATA, I would say go for it and modify the case to put in a proper eSATA socket.
