Hi erkerb,

unfortunately not... I did some changes today and now I don't have either LAN or WLAN. On the forum are so many suggestions how to setup WiFi that it is not easy for me to pick the right one out of it. I'm not a Linux expert!
But I will keep trying.

[quote="ckiick"]How to get wireless (and optionally wired) connection to work with netcfg.

Hi ckiick,

I placed the driver in the right folder but when I run depmod -a I get error: ......._SMP_820/modules.builtin: no such file or directory

What can be wrong?
Rob

1) Get the right driver.
Big thanks to takbal for the new driver.
Download the driver from http://www.2shared.com/file/sb6mQzaA/rt3390_WPA.html unzip it and copy the rt3390sta.ko.gz file to
/usr/lib/modules/2.6.31.6_SMP_820/kernel/drivers/net/wireless. Then "rmmod rt3390sta; depmod -a; modprobe rt3390sta".

There is nothing "wrong" there, it will work just fine.

WarHeadsSE is right: nothing is wrong. You can tell because modprobe works. The error message is common and has nothing to do with the rt3390sta driver. You should be able to continue with the setup of wireless. After doing the modprobe step, do an "lsmod" to see the driver.

lsmod gives me: rt3390sta size: 901992 Used by: 0 (this should be 1?)

When I run netcfg wireless I have got the same output as you (nl80211 generic netlink not found, Failed to initialize driver nl80211 and Cannot open RFKILL control device)

I'm not sure why it's trying to use the "nl80211" driver instead of the default "wext" driver. In your wireless config file, you can specify "WPA_DRIVER=wext" or at least don't specify something else. Don't worry about the RFKILL message.

It won't say used by 1 until you actually bring up the interface.

The errors about nl80211 are because the default driver list is "nl80211,wext". Ignore them, or set the driver list as suggested to just wext.
I haven't found a way to get rid of the rfkill message, but it is also harmless. Ignore it also.

I'm not succeeded in bringing up the wireless mode.
For me it is not clear to do what in which conf file... I think that it is because there are two (or more) different configuration methods which are described through each other in the forum. For a beginner, as I am, it's a bit confusing.
For example: do I have to use wpa_supplicant yes or no. When I run netcfg wireless I have got the message that wpa_supplicant did not start, possible configuration error, but where can I find this configuration (file).
I'm a bit hopeless.... maybe someone can explain the different methods, so I understand what i'm doing and better, how it works.
Thanks in advance.
