Swap file location

Postby doknek » Thu Dec 15, 2011 6:54 pm

Guys, I have the B01 pogo plug. I want to upgrade ram by creating swap file. There are two options on the machine to create swap files:

1. External USB HDD
2. USB Flash Drive

Is it recommended to NOT create swap files on any USB HDD/ Drive or just USB Flash drives?

Reason for not creating swap on USB Flash Drive is limited write cycles. But, what if I have lot of 1GB/512MB flash drives that I could exclusively use for swap files. If one dies in months or years, I would just use another Flash drive.

I am aware of USB Flash write speeds being slow. Is that really an issue for this machine? Thanks, please shed some light if you knowledge in swap area.

FLASH = NO NO. Swap wears way too fast.

Is it because it dies or is too slow as compared to USB HDD?

For Pogo B01 with 128MB ram, what is the max swap file that is usable? What are the recommendations?

It's because a lot of people put it on the same drive as their rootfs, and end up with a semi-brick when the flash drive shits, the speed is going to be a limiting factor as well, depending on the devices.

As for a limit? Are you talking a practical, or hard limit? Are you even really using all of the memory :p (hint, htop)

If USB Flash swap file is not recommended, then should we put it on a USB External HDD? Thanks for quick responses.

If it ain't flash based, have at. That's why we specified flash drives.
