Samba ports blocked

Postby superfly » Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:33 pm

Is there a way to change the port for samba? Right now I connect to my network via VPN and then connect to samba. However, downloading files seems pretty slow. I was hoping to just foward port 445 and connect to it without having to VPN as I think that is what is causing the bottleneck. Port 445 is blocked by my ISP though, i thought maybe 139 would work but 135-139 are also blocked. Thanks in advance.

There really is no clean way to do that. Keep in mind, you're limited by your upload bandwidth, no matter what. Just SSH/SCP/VPN

I see. The main devices i will be access my files on away from home will be my iPad and iPhone. I am currently using FileBrowser; which connects via samba. Any suggestions on apps to access via SSH instead? On my Mac I would use Cyberduck; but since I've gotten the iPad I rarely travel with the laptop anymore. Thanks again.

Most applications that use SMB/CIFS will only access files on your local subnet for security reasons. This is also why your ISP also blocks the default ports for SMB/CIFS. Do you remember sasser? Ya, that was spread through vulnerable Windows file sharing. So, that is probably out of the question. And I don't think you can specify the destination port on most clients anyway.
