Testing

Postby phinehas » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:20 pm

Hello.

I bricked my first B01 pogoplug trying to do too much and then trying to revert some changes.

I have another one on the way and would like to ask what would be the best way to go about protecting it after the initial basic install of arch and applicable updates?

Is there a virtualbox version of archlinux that is the same or comparable..which could be run on windows and used for tinkering? If not, can I do the install on one USB stick and then copy it to another..saving that as the backup if I screw up again..then re-fomatting the orginal as the back up, etc.?

It's pretty hard to actually "brick" an oxnas plug.

No, seriously. You've more than likely just have to follow my instructions (posted a lot of places) to replace the rootfs, or boot from SATA with the method I put together.

Otherwise, you've got to zap/burn/shoot/hammer the board to actually turn it into a brick.

Let's just say I put a hammer to it before I read the recovery posts. So, like I said, I have another one coming and I don't want to screw up anything past the inital install, do you have any feedback on the questions I posted? Much appreciated.

As warhead already stated: You cannot really brick that device with anything you do on alarm.
Your idea to use 2 usb sticks could be a possible way. But also if you are only using one stick there should not be a problem: You can always extract a new rootfs onto the drive with a pc running linux (directly, in a VM or using a livecd).

Just don't mess with the NAND and you will be safe!

LOL, ok...ok..I'll get the new cover sheet on the TP reports. I got it.

I literally put a hammer to it before I realized what could be done to fix it.

So, I was only looking for ideas on how to go about "safely" tinkering with adding packages and so forth and not having to worry about messing it up and having to start over...hence wanting to know if I could just clone the USB stick at a basic level after the default stuff is loaded on and updated.

I'll look around here more on going about that. Thanks.
