Did I brick the somewhat unbrickable?

Postby zookie » Sat Mar 03, 2012 6:59 am

I have a POGO-B01

I started following directions on lifehacker including the following:
./install_uboot_mtd0.sh --no-uboot-check
wget http://Arch Linux ARM.com/os/pogoplug/mke2fs
chmod 755 mke2fs
./mke2fs /dev/sda1
mkdir usb
mount /dev/sda1 usb

It was right about there that I figured out that I needed to be following a better guide here on this site at:
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6 ... provideov3

Was able to go to step 12 but after reboot, my plug appears somewhat dead. Probably because I had already done uBoot from lifehacker instructions. I used my linux laptop and tried the root system tarball + mac_addr file. I have tried two USB flash drives and one external 1TB USB hard drive. All have the same result.

Whether I plug a prepared flash drive or USB drive in or not, the result is the same. I plug in the power to the plug and the light on the front never lights up. Not even for a second. I can see the ethernet link light which lights for 1 second, then turns off. This repeats about three times. Then pauses an extra second and repeats again.

I've tried taking the flash or USB drive and reading /var/log files but these are not being updated.

It's as though this unit is completely bricked but I'm hoping someone has something I can try. I have not tried the SATA method because I don't have an enclosure but worst case I could get one.

Thanks!

Use SATA boot, you've destroyed that ability to boot from NAND because you didn't heed the warnings inherent in that script for installing the new uboot.

After that, you'll likely be able to fix that NAND if you so choose

I figured I was pretty much done after reading this:
http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1172

And would have to resort to JTAG (which I'll likely just buy another plug instead)

But if you say SATA boot will work, I'll try it.

WarheadSE,

Wanted to see if you have any thoughts on what I'm seeing.

I set my uImage to nopci and tried a couple different stage1.wrapped links. With each attempt I completely wiped out partitions and started from scratch with the Boot Entirely from SATA post.

My hard drive is plugged into a power source that I normally use with my Apricorn device so I do have power. I am plugging a SATA cable directly from my drive to the pogoplug.

I power up the drive, then power up the pogoplug. No LED for about ten seconds. Then flashes five or six times quickly. Then LED turns off and does not turn back on. DHCP server shows no leases. I've let it sit for quite a while. Ethernet link light has a slow flash like its looping.

Thanks for any ideas!

Did the hard drive churn a good bit ?

It is a very quiet drive so I don't hear the heads seeking much but I just did a test file transfer to the mounted partition and based on that test, the answer is no, it does not churn at all. So it's potentially not getting to the point when it would boot from the SATA drive.

This isn't much of an update but I work with a lot of switches so the flashing ethernet link light just screams negotiation issue.

When I moved the network cable from my Zyxel gigabit switch to a Dlink 10/100 it links up correctly now.

Still does not boot or churn but at least the ethernet issue is resolved.

Appreciate any thoughts on the boot issue. Thanks!

As it turns out, your instructions are perfect, as I'm sure you already knew. My stupid, tired, not feeling well, self didn't name my recreated symbolic link correctly. Everything working great now!

Your simple question helping me diagnose that the device wasn't even booting at all led to the solution.

So to answer the title...No, I did not brick the unbrickable.

Thanks for your help!
