Airprint setup

Postby grizzlebee » Tue Apr 10, 2012 4:46 am

Hi --

I'm a Linux beginner looking for help setting up Airprint on my Pogoplug Pro. I've installed everything according to the wiki and the printer (a Brother HL-2140 connected to my router's USB port--not the Pogoplug) is setup and works correctly with CUPS. My problem is that the printer only shows up as an available Airprint printer for about 5 minutes after I reboot the Pogoplug. After that, nothing is detected until I reboot the Pogoplug. For the short time that the printer is available on Airprint, I'm able to print correctly. Even after the printer is no longer available via Airprint, I'm able to print from from the CUPS administration page. Any ideas what could be causing the printer to disappear? From what I've read avahi is responsible for publishing the printer service. Does the service need to be continually refreshed/restarted to continue publishing the service?

Thanks in advance for any help. This is a great forum and I'm really glad that a place like this exists to help me as I try to learn a thing or two about Linux.

Do you have "DAEMONS=(... avahi-daemon avahi-dnsconfd ...)" in your /etc/rc.conf? I think you need both avahi-daemon and avahi-dnsconfd running to make this work.

I had avahi-daemon in rc.conf but not avahi-dnsconfd. Unfortunately, enabling avahi-dnsconfd didn't solve the problem.

You may need to restart (power-off/on) your printer once the avahi daemons are running. Someone else probably knows better than I do, though.

No luck power cycling both the printer and the print server/router. Do you think the problem stems from the use of a print server instead of having the printer directly connected to the pogoplug?
