Possibilities of using/booting Mini-PCIE SSD?

Postby Praetor » Fri Jun 22, 2012 3:29 pm

Feel free to laugh if this is a stupid idea. :)

Quite some time ago, I picked up a mini-PCIE SSD off of a friend. He had upgraded his Dell Mini and didn't have a use for it. It's a 4G unit, DEL00-01870-1A1CU.

I've had it sitting in a drawer and just came across it. What are the chances that I could remove the wireless card in my PogoPlug Pro, install this and boot from it?

mPCIe and mSATA look very similar, but are very different. Be sure it is a mPCIe connect SSD, and not mSATA!

Good point. Thus far, I'm seeing conflicting stories on whether or not this is a true mini-PCIE or an mSATA PCIE.

It doesn't help that this is a product that's a few years old now too. Oish.

<edit>
Let's assume for a minute that it IS a true mini-PCIE SSD. Would it work as a boot device?

<edit2>
I found this linked from a from the mydellmini.com forums, where the products there make no mention of mSATA.

Looking http://www.runcorestore.com/ProductDeta ... 1265667977
and seeing "MiniPCIe (Internal PATA Control)"

it might work.

I am checking the dimensions though.

/edit

Looks like a full size card. You'd have to modify the pogoplug.

And I'm okay with that. I was planning to anyway when I found an eSATA bracket with a connector that didn't prevent the case from closing.

What are the chances that this will nuke my plug? You've got me worried now about the wrong pin types, I'd just as soon not kill it. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', 'p')lug: no, drive: possibly

Cool. If it burns up the drive then no big loss. It's been sitting unused for a while anyway. Let's see what happens.
