Boot failure, reinstall and now Nw. access problems

Postby jordy22 » Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:10 pm

I would like to start by mentioning that Arch Linux is awesome on my PogoPlug Pro (Black box version) and transformed it from a sluggish/throttled Pogoplug toy to a great Samba and FTP server.

Now the problem:
Few days ago I rebooted it (I found that sometimes this maneuver helps reviving a Samba-based login from a win 7 64 client PC in the same LAN) using the classic /sbin/reboot but the box never recovered properly. I got a front led blinking franticly and no IP access anymore via SSH (No IP assignment, no DHCP). I suspect the root cause was the HDD I had on the second USB port, left connected during reboot and/or possible flash USB w/ Arch Linux FS corruption.

At this point I followed the instructions from the INSTALLATION tab of http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6 ... provideov3, I put a fresh root filesystem tarball on a new USB flash memory, I setup the MAC address in /usr/local/mac_addr and restarted.

Apparently it is booting properly, the LED flashes 20 seconds then solid green, the RJ45 NIC card LEDs blinking, but I still cannot ping the device.
The Access Point DHCP has a IP reserved for this device.
I still need to troubleshoot to check if I can ping the device from other machines in my LAN since I suspect also a firewall filtering from Win 7.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

1) Wrong sub-forum
2) Did you ever do the kernel update? The latest rootfs tarball for the platform has a new set of modules that won't work with the old kernel.

1) Oops, sorry for posting in the wrong place. Where should I put it?
2) Hmm, makes sense. I don't remember if I ever had the kernel updated and even if I did it was some time ago (pacman -Syu), is probably outdated.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but per my understanding the kernel is stored in the box NVRAM, correct? I still have the original FS and if you think is a good idea I'll try to load it to the new USB Flash and try again.

The problem got fixed while using another USB stick (probably the files system was corrupted due to a defective USB flash memory):
I formatted the stick in my Ubuntu machine
# umount /dev/sdc1
# mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdc1
# e2label /dev/sdc1 myarch
... edited the /usr/local/mac_addr. to accommodate my MAC address and all went back to normal.
Now installing Samba and FTP servers and going back to normal(ity) :)
Thank you.
