2012.07 boots ok, breaks after pacman-Syu

Postby fovea1959 » Thu Sep 13, 2012 6:30 pm

I have a Pogoplug Pro, been using it for a while. Having to put together a new boot disk, having trouble with updates.

This Pogo has been in use for quite a while, originally running a 2.6 kernel. I put together a new boot disk from ArchLinuxARM-2012.07-oxnas-rootfs.tar.gz, and it boots fine. I then do a pacman -Syu, and it does not come up after a reboot. The LED blinks fast for a while, it accesses the disk, then just stops accessing the disk (LED keeps blinking). No response on the network...

If I reformat and recreate the disk from ArchLinuxARM-2012.07-oxnas-rootfs.tar.gz, all is ok again.

I read the "Important Upgrade Notice", saw the last posting:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his update is for device that have had the old kernel installed. Fresh install devices, and devices that have had this update run will be able to use the new rootfs directly.

I'm thinking that since 2012.07 boots, I'm in the latter category, so I don't think it's the update. Any ideas on why 2012.07 footfs works, but my Pogoplus stops booting after pacman -Syu?

I'm starting to suspect that I am in the "have had the old kernel installed" category, but I'm scared to run the update-oxnas; I'm scared that it will brick my device.

I have a feeling it may be related to kmod being bumped today. I can investigate later.

I'll hold off on doing an pacman -Syu.

This pogo isn't going to be in use for a few weeks. Is there anything I can do to collect more information to aid your troubleshooting? I have a freshly reimaged disk, and am set up to reimage pretty quickly...

Unless you have a serial console, no.

I don't... yet. I think I'm going to do something about that so that I don't have to be mortally scared of bricking this thing.

I am much more comfortable with my Sheevaplug for that very reason....

Found it. kmod-10-1 removes the /usr prefix from lib.

Simply: create a symlink!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'ln -s /usr/lib/modules /lib/modules')

We'll be smacking glibc soon enough.

so I would go ahead and pacman -Syu, then
$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'cd /mnt/wherethepogodiskismounted
cd lib
ln -s ../usr/lib/modules .
')

reboot, and all *should* be well. Will try next week.

WarheadsSE, thanks for finding this.

Do you consider this link a permanent solution or will kmod be upgraded again to reflect the recent change to /usr/lib/modules?

The glibc update coming .. today, will solve this annoyance.

But it raises another:

/lib/firmware/gmac_copro_firmware needs to be moved to /usr/lib/firmware

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WarheadsSE', '[')b]/lib/firmware/gmac_copro_firmware needs to be moved to /usr/lib/firmware

Currently on both of my V3's there is the same copy of gmac_copro_firmware in both /lib/firmware and /usr/lib/modules. That may be some kind of artifact of the migration from /lib/modules to /usr/lib/modules though I am not sure. Should the one in modules remain there?
