Boot failed after kernel update

Postby alfred1 » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:25 am

Hello together,

i had trouble when updating to the new oxnas kernel.
I described the problem here with 4 postings: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2453&start=100#p28205
At first i installed on my Pogoplug Pro (which is as far as i understand a PCI device) the NOPCI kernel into NAND.
After reboot the system died on bootup.

After manually fixing the symlink to /lib/ the system booted again.
But wifi does not work - as far as i understand in fact that i patched the wrong kernel.

So i patched the NAND manually by executing:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '

Erasing 128 Kibyte @ 760000 -- 100 % complete

Writing data to block 56 at offset 0x700000
Writing data to block 57 at offset 0x720000
')

But: after rebooting network does not respond.

I created a second usb stick with a new blank filesystem "Help - it stopped working" on the pogoplug archlinux installation page (http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv6 ... provideov3) recommends.
This stick works, but i want to get the old stick working again. The old system runs for over two years nearly without problems
and i dont want to reinstall all services.

So i fetched the DMESG log files from /var/log for both sticks and diffed them.
As far as i understand there are no bigger problems, but there are some differences.

Here the DMESG log of the OLD usb drive i want to get working again

I recommend to copy both logs into a diff program like meld (linux) or winmerge (windows) to see the differences.

Do you have some ideas what i made wrong?

Thank you in advance, i am sure, it can be recovered :-)

I would bet your old FS doesn't match the new kernel modules

I agree with your bet - i thought about that, too.

But why the OLD USB stick worked successfully with the NEW NOPCI kernel and does not work with the PCI kernel?
This is a bit irritating...

Do you have an idea what i could do now?

Thank you for your support :-)

By the way i want to say thanks for all the great support over the last years.
I read very much postings that all solved my problems, but now is the time where i need "active" help ;)

Have a great weekend.

Ok, what do you recommend to do now? Trying to update the filesystem?
What do i have to do for that?

Downloading the filesystem from here (http://archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM ... est.tar.gz)
and extracting to the root folder? Is that all?

I tried to get wifi working with the NEW USB stick but it won't work - don't know why.

On my OLD USB stick i ran f2sck, it fixed some inodes. Also the old stick seems to be running (green led shines fine - no blinking and not turning off after boot), but i cannot connect via ssh over ethernet nor via wifi. Also ping fails.
Also have set up an dhcp daemon on my local machine to check if it tries to get an ip, but no results.

Sometimes it seems to be better not to update....

Ok. I extracted the new ROOTFS to the OLD USB stick.
The system now boots normally, i can connect via SSH to the system.
I have to fix some files that have been replaced (e.g. rc.conf), but this should be a minor issue.

But now the system seems to be unable to load the wifi driver.
I am trying to fix this now, maybe you have some tips?

hm i think i can reproduce why the system can't boot successfully. The network configuration mismatches.
If you reset the rc.conf to original from original blank filesystem the system can boot. So i decided to comment out all options and re-enable them by rebooting after every change. After disabling all network configuration the system boots normally.

But i have to detect how to set up the eth0 interface and how to set up the wireless ra0 interface...give me a week and i'll get it back up and running ;-)
