Thank you both. I'll try to connect the drive directly and report back. :)

So I'm now using a laptop hard drive powered from a 5v wall wart and have it connected directly to the sata port in the plug. I built the drive following the thread instructions and also ran dd to copy the uImage.nopci.
Here is what I get from serial:

Is my rootfs bad? Thanks for any insight,

It looks like it's reading the disk just fine, but it doesn't like the kernel. Maybe you needed to sync after dd-ing the kernel; just a guess. It's not getting far enough to mount the rootfs. Don't worry about the bad "lightled" command; that is an error in the uboot environment (probably should be more like "run lightled") that occurs only after the kernel fails to load.

Is there another version of the kernel I should try? I have tried the kernel from the "last best rootfs" thread and the one in the rootfs from this thread. I am sync'ing after the dd. I'll try an older one.

This thread was a big help: http://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=4969
I used the uImage.nopci and lib/modules from the update-oxnas.tar.gz and now it boots! :D
Thanks for all the help!

Congratulations! It all seems way more difficult than it should be. I am curious, though. Aren't the kernels and modules in the update-oxnas tarball identical to the ones in the "last best rootfs" tarball? If so, then sync after dd was probably the key.

I'm new to linux/archlinux so I cannot answer that. :? Are there steps I should now take to prevent future issues since this model is EOL?
Thanks again for all the help!

I took the kernel from the rootfs I was using, and put that where the disk_create script wanted the kernel. After I did that it worked great
