Possibility for cross-compilation

Postby dsljanus » Thu Aug 08, 2013 11:25 pm

I just bought a RaspberryPI, followed the instructions and now have a fully functional Arch installation running in the miniature computer. I intend to use this setup for data acquisition and some other stuff. The only problem I have is that when I install a new package with "pacman" the process takes a lot of time (even for small packages) due to the low-power nature of the RPI. My question is this: Is it at all possible to complete part of or the whole process in a desktop PC (running Arch) and then "transfer" the package to the RPI?

Forgive me if I placed this in the wrong subsection of the Forum, and also forgive me if my question makes no sense. Thus far I am a pretty "superficial" Linux user, and my greatest achievement has been installing and configuring Arch (no flattery intended).

I'm pretty new to this myself, but - as it seems like you know - there is something called cross-compiling. I have tried looking into it, but it is beyond what I'm currently able to understand. Some searching found this:http://archlinuxarm.org/developers/distcc-cross-compiling.

Good luck!

When you use pacman all packages already come precompiled. You probably have a slow SD card and/or slow connection to the mirror so it takes a long time. Even with a class 10 card it can be slow.
