Raid 5 Migration experience

Postby Socaltom » Fri Jun 20, 2014 9:49 pm

Just thought I would share my experience migrating a Raid 5 ( software) system from my x86 linux box to my pogoplug V2.
For reasons I won't go into I decided to convert my Arch x86 server to a Win7 box. However, the Arch box contained an array of 2x 2TB drives set up as RAID 5. So I pulled out the drives and put them into an assortment of USB external drive cases I had lying around ( don't we all?). Booted up the pogoplug, then plugged in and powered the three drives. Opened a console window and ran lsblk. Darned if it didn't recognize all three drives and the raid setup. It was totally plug and play.
I'm now slowly extracting the stuff off of them. Transfer speed is pretty good, windows has reported as high as 50MB/min over my 1GB network, so I assume that the fact that the data is spread over 3 drives is letting it exceed the 25MB/sec USB limit.

Anyhow, it was much easier than I expected.
Cheers,
Tom

It can't exceed 30 mB/s. Don't know how you got 50 especially with all the raid overhead. Iftop would be a more accurate way than windows. If it peaks at 50 sometimes it might be due to caching

Maybe that's what happened , soon as I posted 50 the next transfer was in the 30s.
