USB timeouts with CUPS

I am attempting to get printing working under ALARM with my Samsung ML-1710. I have set everything up correctly I believe, and am trying to print a test page, but I keep getting the error "SpliX Cannot open job". I've crawled through Cups' error_log with debug enabled but don't see anything significant before that in the log other than "Got USB transaction timeout during read." After that error, I get errors like "rastertoqpdl stopped with status 4" and "gstoraster stopped with status 139 (Directory not empty)", but I'm assuming they are effects and not causes.

To debug this, I tried creating a very simple PDF of my own and printing that. That file prints just fine for some reason. I compared error_log from both runs and I don't see a whole lot of difference. The main difference is that on the successful run, after getting to status "Processing page 1..", I start seeing the message "SpliX Next requested page" after about 4 seconds, while there is a gap of 28 seconds before I see any more output in the log for the failed print.

Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? Since I can print something, it doesn't sound like I set something up incorrectly. I can provide error_log in both cases if it helps, but they are large with all the debug output and the board won't let me upload them as attachments.
