5.15.x kernel is working fine. 5.16.2 was working, too (but has not reached the a.l.a at this time).

We had this before:

Pi boot ony with hdmi attached https://archlinuxarm.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=15423

workaround was in /boot/config.txt
- remove dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
- set hdmi_force_hotplug=1

Does this help now again ?

No, it does not help at this issue. I have build a valid hdmi set (resolution / vertical fraequency) in config.txtx additionally - no change. For debbugging maybe an access via serial console may help - but I do not have one.

FWIW I has the very same problem. 5.16.3-1-aarch64-ARCH / RPi3 Model B v1.2. It only boots with HDMI attached. I'm trying to get more info.

Experiencing the same problem on two RPi 3b+

With linux-aarch-5.16.2-2 everything is working okay. To exclude problems from other packages I started a fresh install, pinned linux-aarch64 to 5.15.1-1 and performed a full system upgrade, resulting in a booting system.

I can't confirm this to be a HDMI specific issue, as the systems hangs during startup when connected to a monitor, too. After the hang the screen immediately goes blank and network is dead, too.

Using linux-aarch-5.16.3-1 on an RPI 4 work's without problems as of now.

Confirming I was able to boot the machine without HDMI connected with kernel 5.15.5 (context). Packages for previous kernels are available in http://tardis.tiny-vps.com/aarm/ (source).

I've met the same problem as described by df8oe and mmoya.

For my rpi3b, it boots normally w/ linux-aarch-5.16.2-2. After updating to linux-aarch-5.16.3-1 it only boots with HDMI attached.
Adding various lines including 'hdmi_force_hotplug=1' to /boot/config.txt is not helpful.

I had a hard time finding a rollback server for arch linux ARM packages, until I found the post by mmoya. Thanks,
blucmt

I don't see anything in the 5.16.2-2 to to 5.16.3-1 bump related to config changes so it's safe to assume this is an upstream bug. Has anyone checked for an open bug report and filed one if not found?

I will look into it. There were a lot of changes to vc4 in 5.16.3. So it looks like a regression.

Could anyone who is affected please tell the size of the bcm2837-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb (located at the boot partition)?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lategoodbye', 'I') will look into it. There were a lot of changes to vc4 in 5.16.3. So it looks like a regression.

I don't have such file in /boot. The system is up to date except for linux-aarch64 and linux-aarch64-headers packages that are hold on version 5.15.5-1.

FWIW:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '[alarm@rpi3 ~]$ ls -l /boot/bcm*.dtb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 29011 May 27 2021 /boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b-plus.dtb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 28392 May 27 2021 /boot/bcm2710-rpi-3-b.dtb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 26890 May 27 2021 /boot/bcm2710-rpi-cm3.dtb
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 49218 May 27 2021 /boot/bcm2711-rpi-4-b.dtb
')
