Samba Server Wont Start on Asus Flip (SOLVED)

Postby nathan2423 » Sat Aug 06, 2016 4:16 pm

After reading more posts on samba than I want to admit, I am stuck. Here is my problem in gettting the samba server to start:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'root@asusflip xxx]# systemctl start smbd nmbd
Job for nmbd.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status nmbd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
Job for smbd.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status smbd.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
')

systemctl status nmbd.service gives this:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', '* nmbd.service - Samba NetBIOS name server
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/nmbd.service; enabled; vendor preset:

Can anyone give me a suggestion on how to proceed. I have reinstalled samba several times and am at my wit's end!

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply and here it is. FWIW, I also am unable to get samba to run in Crouton. I am usually pretty good at this though I am not a linux expert:

Wait, so this is on Crouton? Not a native install?

No - No - Sorry for the confusion - I was just noting that this afternoon I discovered that samba was not working for me on Crouton either --

So to be clear - my question and all the code posts come from a native SD card install of Arch!

Sorry for confusion - just posted the reference to crouton in case somebody smarter than me was able to deduce something from that fact....

I've read a large number of post about permissions in the var/log and similar directories, and I seem to have gotten past that point - at least I don't see explicit messages about that anymore. All this is a native Arch install following the instructions on the wiki explicitly for the Asus flip.

It's possible that I don't know enough about samba in Arch that I have failed to install some necessary component, but after my last start from scratch I followed the Arch wiki on samba religiously (or so I think) in getting to this point.

You do definitely have some issues with your configuration, based on the parameters errors.

Your logs, however, are clipped, making them hard to decipher.

Thank you WarheadsSE.....

Somehow I have it working, just not sure how. There were two variables though, in case this helps someone:

1) I discovered that my OTHER machines, which I thought were working on Samba, were showing the same error. I investigated the /etc/hosts file and took out all entries other than the first line of 127.0.0.1 localhost That got two of my other machines working.

2) I then copied the samba.conf file from the working machines to my other machines, including the Asus flip.

I THINK that's all I did, but as I type this I do believe I issued systemctrl disable smbd nmbd, as part of seeing if I could start them manually. I don't recall issuing the enable command again, so maybe that command was a factor when I rebooted.

ANYWAY I have mine working and I apologize for taking up bandwidth. Thanks for your work in running this forum!
